In the tradition of opera at the Masada National Park, Guiseppe Verdi's La Traviata, directed by Michal Znaniecki, conducted by Daniel Oren with the Israel Opera and the Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon Lezion, will be performed between June 12-17, 2014 as part of the Opera Festival.
La Traviata – "The Fallen Woman" – is an opera in three parts set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. Based on a play adapted from the novel "The Lady of the Camellias" by Alexander Dumas, it is a tragic love story and one of the most performed operas worldwide.
The setting - Paris at the beginning of the 18th century. Violetta Valéry, the beautiful heroine supported by lovers, celebrates her recovery from illness by throwing a party. Her friend, Gastone, brings a long time admirer, Alfredo Germont, who loves Violetta. Violetta already has a lover, Baron Douphol. Violetta moves in with Alfredo. Alfredo's father convinces Violetta to leave Alfredo. She returns to the Baron and admits she loves him against her better judgment and to prevent a duel. Alfredo humiliates Violetta and challenges the Baron to a duel. Violetta's health worsens and Alfredo learns of Violetta's sacrifice for him. Alfredo rushes to Violetta, who after singing a passionate duet together, dies in his arms.
