The Ayalon Institute is located in Rehovot and tells the story of a secret underground factory that manufactured ammunition during the years 1945-1948. On the surface, the Ayalon Institute was used for training young people for Kibbutz life in Israel, but in fact it was a secret ammunition factory set up by the Jewish underground in which over 2 million bullets were manufactured. The Ayalon Institute was established by the “Haganah”, the largest Jewish underground movement during the British Mandate. The Ayalon Institute was covered with four meters of earth, and its openings were camouflaged by the floors of a laundry and bakery, so that some of the kibbutz members were not even aware of its existence.
