Mary's Well
Mary’s Well is situated in the center of Nazareth, a city in the North of Israel close to Tiberias. Mary’s Well, also referred to as “The Spring of the Virgin Mary” or the “Fountain of Mary”, is the spot where Gabriel the Archangel appeared to Mary and told her of her impending pregnancy with the Son of God. In Christian tradition, this is known as the Annunciation.
Today, the site of Mary’s Well is not situated in the original Biblical location. Mary’s Well was renovated by the city of Nazareth for the millenium celebrations in the year 2000. The Greek Orthodox believe the original watering hole at which Mary is said to have met with Gabriel the Archangel lies below their Church of the Annunciation. Catholic believers visit the Basilica of the Annunciation, where they consider the event to have taken place.
