The Sea of Galilee (Kinnereth) is the largest source of freshwater in Israel. This natural lake, also known as Lake of Gennesaret, Kinnereth Lake or Lake Tiberias, receives much of its water directly from the Jordan River. It is located alongside the city of Tiberias in Israel’s Upper Galilee, close to the Golan Heights and the Jordan Valley. The Sea of Galilee (Kinnereth) provides the majority of Israel’s national drinking water since 1964; a percentage of its water also goes to Jordan as per the Israeli-Jordanian Peace Accords in 1994. The lake’s continually decreasing water line is a source of great concern and anxiety for both Israel and Jordan.
