Western Wall Tunnel
The Western Wall Tunnel is an underground tunnel which exposes the full length of the Western Wall. The tunnel is adjacent to the Western Wall and is located under buildings in the Old City of Jerusalem. The majority of the original length of the Western Wall is hidden underground and is 485 meters in length. The open air section of the Wall is approximately 60 metres. Many archaeological finds include Herodian streets, artefacts from the Umayyad period, and structures dating to the Ayyubid, Mamlude and Hasmonean periods. The 'Western Stone' was also found in the tunnel. It is considered to be one of the heaviest weights to be lifted by humans without machinery. It weighs approximately 570 tons.
It is now possible for visitors to enter the Western Wall tunnel's southern entrance near the Western Wall, walk the tunnel's length, and exit from the northern end.
Tours of the Western Wall Tunnel are offered with a tour guide only: Sundays throughThursdays from 7 am till the evening and Fridays and festival eves: 7am-12 noon. The site is closed on Shabbat, festivals, Yom Kippur Eve, Rosh Hashana Eve and Tisha B'av.
