Yardenit
Yardenit is the name of the spot at which the Jordan River waters separate from the Sea of Galilee (Kinnereth) and begin to flow towards the entrance of the Dead Sea. It is located on the south-western end of the Sea of Galilee.
Yardenit is surrounded by trees, flora and fauna. Yardenit is an important stopping point on any pilgrimage tour of the Holyland. It is the official site of Christian baptism in Israel and is even registered as such with the Israeli authorities.
Each year, over half a million tourists stop at Yardenit to perform individual and group baptism ceremonies. The site has facilities to assist all visitors when performing their baptism ceremony. Dressing rooms, a stairway leading directly into the water and a large guest parking lot are located at the site. A restaurant and gift shop can also be found conveniently nearby. Additionally, Yardenit’s location near the Sea of Galilee (Kinnereth) makes it easy to visit other close by Christian religious sites like Tabgha, the Mount of the Beatitudes and the Church of Loaves and Fishes.
Yardenit is also believed by many to be the location where Jesus baptised John the Baptist.
