Sea of Galilee Hotels
The Sea of Galilee, also known as the Kinneret, is in fact a lake and is the largest freshwater lake in Israel with the Jordan River flowing through it. The Sea of Galilee is located on the ancient route of Via Maris and many nations such as the Greeks, Hasmoneans and the Romans established thriving communities in the area. Much of Jesus’s life and work occurred around the Sea of Galilee and many of the miracles took place here including at Bethaisda where the miracles of Walking on Water and Curing the Blind Man took place; the miracle of the Loaves and Fishes at Tabgha , the sermon on the Mount which is thought to have been preached on the Mount of Beatitudes. Magdala, a short distance away, today known as Migdal, was thought to have been the birthplace of Mary Magdalene.
The Baptismal site on the Jordan River known as Yardenit is believed to be where Jesus himself was baptized. It is located at the southern tip of the Sea of Galilee. Pilgrims come from the world over to visit this holy place, to take home some sacred water or to undertake a baptism ceremony.
Capernaum was noted in the gospels as the home of the apostles Peter, Andrew, James and John. It is believed that Jesus taught in the synagogue there on Saturdays. There are many preserved archaeological remains on the site including the remains of a synagogue from the time of Jesus under the remains of a later synagogue from the 4th or 5th century AD. The current Franciscan church was constructed in 1990. When the Romans expelled the Jews from Jerusalem in 135 the focus of Jewish scholarship moved to Tiberias on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.
The Sea of Galilee is a very popular tourism attraction with many archaeological and spiritual sites for both Christians and Jews, both local and from overseas.
